Salt Water Nano Cube Set Up Question?

penguin57 asked:
I am setting up a 24g nano cube . I am not in a huge rush to stock it with fish or anything, but I would like to get it going. My question is, can I just put the sand and water in now and add the live rock later, say like a few pounds at a time? I have a bag each of Pink Fiji and Indo Pacific, (both are Arga-Alive,) and about 8 lbs of Argamax Select. Will the tank start to cycle or do I need the rock for that? I already have a 12g nano cube set up as a coral only tank, but when I set that up a year ago, I put the sand and rock in at the same time so I am just curious if it’s okay to hold off on the rock for a week or two.
Thanks!

There is a reason why it is recommended that you add both at the same time. This is because both sand and rock have die off that causes the cycle to start. It is not necessary to add both of these at the same time but it is a good thing to do so. As you stated you are not in any rush so this will not effect you. As long as you do add rock in moderation this should not be a problem, “in other words do not allow the sand to cycle thru and then add 25 pounds of rock after that is done”. This will make it seem as if you tank has been cycling forever. I often recommend to add a chopped clam when you add the sand only to cycle a tank. This will encourage the tank to cycle due to the die off it cause ammonia and then that will turn to Nitrites and then Nitrates. That is your cycle. I hope that this helped if not then try this web site. and go to the message board section. I often answer questions there, anyway good luck and have fun, That is what this hobby is all about.
