Hi, I’m buying a nano cube 12 Gallon from one of my friend’s parents for $50 for the filter, light, tank, hood, and bubbler. This is my first aquarium, so I don’t want to get a saltwater tank, it seems like too much work. What would the best set up be for this (fish, sand/gravel, plants, plastic cave things, etc.) tank? I sort of want some tetras, or other kind of schooling fish. I don’t really know anything about aquariums or fish at all. (I want fish that are fairly hardy, I don’t want to be buying new ones every week) and also want fish that don’t make alot of mess. Would getting a bottom feeder fish help? Thanks.

first you will need to cycle the tank and you may need to change the filter material if used for saltwater, best cycle fishless

congrats….
no heater?
if you don’t want any problems then don’t overstock the tank, don’t over feed the fish and don’t give the tank too much light and the tank will be bulletproof.
a bottom feeder isn’t really required in any tank but alot of people like there personalties.
for a tank that small i wouldn’t bother, maybe a ghost shrimp thats it.
all freshwater tropical fish are hardy once they get comfy in the tank
a great fish for that tank especially because it has a black background are endler live bearers.
super colourful, stay small, playful with each other, herbivores so they eat flake food and nibble at algae to help keep tank clean.
you could get 10 of them easy for that cube and with dark gravel and nice fake plants it would look sweet. There colours really come out in dark tanks.
low bio load as well and easy to take care of. But they do need a heater and a wee bit of salt in the water makes them happy.
just make sure you get all males……
Good Luck!!!

ok…..
this is what I would do:
1) GET A HEATER- this is needed for any tropical fish and the temp should be kept at around 75-80 degrees F. (anything but goldfish needs a heater)
2) Get a few catfish of some sort- sucker fish get to big for a 12 gallon (I have one that is about 13 inches long!!!)
3) Buy food (well…you know why :))
4) as for fish…i love neon tetras (they are about $2 each and are somewhat small (like 2 centimeters) . they are schooling fish so get about 5 atleast. they will also need some plants to hide in. it will make them feel less stressed.
- i would recommend looking at other tetras. they are mostly small and are easy to take care of.
5)have fun…freshwater tanks are easy…I am 15 years old and have had a tank for over 7 years…so i started my fist tank when i was 8 and it was a 30 gallon tank. when i was 14 i started a saltwater tank and it was alot easier than i thought it would be. (I have had no fish die yet!!!!) if you do your reserch, you could actually start a salt tank, but i would try to get some fresh water experiance first.
6) remember to change the filter about every two to three weeks.(very important)

I will be happy to help you through the prossess of setting the tank up!!!! as you can tell i LOVE fish!!!!!!
