How long should I wait before adding a shrimp to a new 12 gallon Nano Cube?

Tanner G asked:

I just got my nano cube with saltwater from Petco all of the water conditions are perfect and live sand and rock are in the tank. I wanted to add a Pepermint shrimp today on the second day it was running then wait before adding more stuff. Is this ok or should I wait before adding one or is there anything that can be put in there right now.

you need to add all the things you want in there first then add the shrimp and the other things.

with saltwater, and especially with any of the nano tanks, the best piece of advice you will ever get is to have patience. The only thing that happens fast in this hobby is disaster. I know it is very hard to resist that urge to stock the tank right away, but try your best. trust me, you will be so thankful in the long run. Your tank really needs to cycle before you add anything. This can take 3 weeks to 3 months. I would at the very least wait 3 weeks. Give your tank time to cycle. your tank will go through algae blooms as it cycles also. after 3 weeks maybe start with a small cleanup crew. add a couple snails, wait another week or two, then get your shrimp. If this is your first experience with saltwater, you need this time to get use to topping off the tank, keeping the temperature stable, etc. Take things slow. with such a small tank you have to add things very slowly. there is very little room for error, and one little mistake might cause your tank to crash in no time. Good luck! Nanos are awesome, sometimes a little frustrating (Im currently battling the dreaded hair algae) but they are so rewarding!
