The key factor to controlling nitrate primarily relates to how you take care of your aquarium. At various stages in the life of a saltwater aquarium, from a newly cycled tank to a well established one, you should set up a regular maintenance care routine that is suitable for your particular system.

Nitrate levels rise for a number of reasons.
1. your tank is new and it hasn’t completed cycling yet.
2. You are overfeeding your fish and the waste is breaking down and being converted to nitrate quickly.
3. you have not done enough water changes to lower the nitrate level sufficiently.
In a small tank like yours you will need to do waterchanges more often than if it was a 40 gallon.
having live rock in a marine / reef aquarium helps to lower the nitrate level.

high nitrate is caused by to much waste so it could be your filtration system is not working properly or your over feeding your fish to remedy the problem quickest but a nitrate reducer in a powder form liquids take much longer to work
